Using a Positive Approach to Dementia Care Webcast
July 21, 2020
8:00 am - 12:00 pm and 12:40 - 3:30 pm

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enhance your skills when interacting and caring for residents with dementia. The speaker is a widely recognized expert on the topic.

If you have a memory care unit or a special program for residents who are memory-impaired, this webinar should be high on your list of educational sessions to attend! Content is applicable to all levels of care including assisted living, home health, and skilled nursing. If nothing else, consider registering a care coordinator or the person in charge of staff training.

Coping With Challenging Situations in Dementia Care

The session is designed to help care partners better understand why the person they are trying to help may at times exhibit ‘challenging behaviors.’ It will focus on looking beyond the disease to recognize other possible factors. This problem-solving approach will be presented to help reduce the intensity, frequency, or occurrence of challenges. This will also help develop better communication skills when working with people living with dementia by emphasizing the value of empathetic and supportive communication. The overall goal is to reduce or minimize unproductive conversations and resistive behaviors by using effective verbal and physical skills. It will also focus on helping develop better observational skills to recognize and intervene effectively when behavioral challenges occur. The session will emphasize the value of matching helping behaviors to the person’s needs and retained abilities to promote a sense of control and self-direction. Grading and providing helping behaviors based on the person’s abilities and needs will assist in fostering positive interactions during care activities rather than struggles.

This session will include:

1. List of six factors that may be used to determine what may be contributing to ‘challenging behaviors’
2. Discuss the value of knowing the person and their history in effective communication efforts.
3. Describe & use empathetic & supportive communication techniques when interacting with a person living with Dementia.
4. Identify the degree of involvement the person with dementia is experiencing
5. Discriminate between helping at the ‘just right’ level and neglect or ‘taking over’
