|RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES— LEAD STORY
Living The Legacy
At the annual Florida Conference on Aging, Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) Secretary Samuel Verghese announced a new initiative to honor Florida seniors. The podcast – Living the Legacy – features interviews with Florida elders and shares their life experiences, wisdom, and contributions.
“One of our main goals at the Department of Elder Affairs is to celebrate our elders,” said Verghese. “I’m thrilled to announce this podcast and share amazing stories of dedication and sacrifice as we expand our efforts to honor the legacies of our elders.”
With nearly 5 million residents age 60 and older, Florida leads the nation with the highest population percentage of seniors and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. DOEA pays tribute to seniors, not just through services, but also through initiatives like Living the Legacy that recognize the numerous contributions of elders to their communities and the state overall.
The first interview, a two-part episode, features Lieutenant General Lawrence Snowden, USMC (Ret.), who shares his experience at the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. During the course of his service, General Snowden was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1979 after 37 years of service.
Living the Legacy is available at livingthelegacy.us. Listeners can also submit the names and stories of Florida elders for consideration for a future interview.

As a master problem solver Jeff has spent the last three-and-a-half years mentoring entrepreneurs around the globe. A millionaire before the age of 30, Hoffman developed a philosophy saying it is important to create a mentality in the workplace of “I get to go to work” versus “I have to go to work.”

Several weeks ago I reported in this space that LeadingAge Florida, led by Dr. Erwin Bodo, had testified at an AHCA hearing about the development of a price-based system for reimbursing nursing homes through Medicaid. Since then, Erwin has developed the conceptual framework for a new, price-based reimbursement plan, based on a set of reimbursement principles that emphasize high-quality care. He will present that framework to AHCA and Navigant at the agency’s next public hearing next Thursday, and we will keep you posted about both the outcome of the hearing and the larger process as it nears its conclusion later this year. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions about the process, the framework, or the principles that are driving our efforts.

Attendees of the ever-popular Nursing Home Survey Trends Workshop held earlier this year submitted questions to Connie regarding best practices, tricks of the trade, survey guidance, and regulatory compliance. The compiled questions and answers will be shared with you over the coming weeks.
Q1: Do you have to give each surveyor a laptop during survey?
Connie says: No, facilities are not required to give each surveyor a laptop during survey. F514 states if the facility has electronic health records they must grant surveyor access to the records, provide a tutorial on how to use its particular electronic system and designate an individual who is able to respond to any questions or assist the surveyor as needed in accessing electronic information in a timely fashion. Having more than one laptop available to the surveyor may allow required tasks to be completed more quickly.
Q2: Why are non-skids socks in a dementia unit being questioned?
Connie says: Non-skid socks could be considered a dignity issue under the focused dementia care guidelines issued November 27, 2015, S&C: 16-04 NH. A high percentage of residents wearing socks/non-skid socks may indicate that staff has not been successful in finding ways to have the residents accept needed care/grooming.
