Mark your calendars for LeadingAge Florida’s Legislative Days – an important opportunity to meet with your state legislators and advocate for the issues that matter the most to you and your residents! Numerous mission critical issues will be in play during the 2018 Legislative Session, including:

  • New emergency planning requirements including prioritized restoration of power for nursing homes and ALFs, and generator power and fuel storage requirements
  • Significant changes to CCRC regulations
  • Funding for the “hold harmless” provision of the Medicaid reimbursement system for nursing homes
  • Preservation and ensure proper usage of the Sadowski housing funds

LeadingAge Florida’s Legislative Days provides and presents you with an opportunity to:

  • Tell key legislators and their staff about the issues your community faced in preparation for and in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and, most importantly, the measures taken to protect your residents and staff.
  • Share with your legislators the confusion surrounding the emergency rulemaking efforts and the frustrations of trying to comply with the intent of the rules within timeframes that were impossible to meet.
  • Assure legislators that your community and LeadingAge Florida support efforts to ensure resident safety during and after an emergency, including generator power and fuel storage requirements, provided realistic timeframes and fuel storage options are included, and stress the importance of prioritized power restoration for nursing homes and ALFs.
  • Let legislators know if you already comply, or are well on your way to complying, with the requirements of the emergency rules and urge them not to change the major requirements of the rule.
  • Ensure that any changes made to the regulation of Florida CCRCs are reasonable, justifiable, and don’t result in potential unintended consequences for financially stable CCRCs.
  • Talk with legislators about the lack of infrastructure necessary to care for a growing population of low-income seniors, and tell your story about the need for legislators to spend Sadowski Trust funds as they were intended – to ensure access to affordable housing for Florida seniors.

Legislators need to hear from you so they understand, promote, and protect the programs and services your communities provide for Florida’s seniors. Your credibility as an industry expert and as a provider makes you an ideal advocate for your community and the seniors you serve!

Join us for lunch where the Who’s Who of the State of Florida meets to make deals and plan strategy. After lunch we will head to the Capitol to make sure the collective voice of LeadingAge Florida is heard. We will make sure you have all the background and talking points you need to be effective.

Why is Grassroots Advocacy So Important?
Legislators listen to constituents, because they answer to them! This event will give you the opportunity to speak with lawmakers while they are making critical decisions about the state budget, long-term care, and senior housing. By telling them your story, you can personalize the issues and influence the outcome of pending legislation. Legislators need to hear from you so services and programs for senior Floridians are treated fairly and tax exemptions for “homes for the aged” are preserved. As a provider, your credibility makes you the perfect expert advocate for your community and the elders you serve. Your attendance is needed to make LeadingAge Florida’s unified voice heard loud and clear.
